Junior: In Lopez's junior year he continued to showcase his versatility as a Cardinal. Lopez earned his first crown as BIG EAST champion in the 200-backstroke in a winning time of 1:44.64, making him an All- BIG EAST performer. He also put points on the board for the Cardinals in the 200-butterfly in 1:47.68 swimming to a 5th place finish. Lopez made the B- final in the 400-IM to earn 12th in 3:55.69. At the Purdue Invite Lopez swam to 1st place in the 200-butterfly in 1:47.66 his season best time, 3rd in the 100-butterfly, and 11th in the 100-backstroke in 48.76 and 49.91 respectively. Lopez was one of eight men chosen to represent the Cardinals at the SMU Classic posting times of 49.90 and 1:49.06 in the 100- and 200-butterfly. Lopez started his season with an impressive 1st place sweep in the 100-, 200-butterfly and 200-backstroke at the Xavier dual meet.
Sophomore: Lopez continued to be a major player in the backstroke and fly events for the Cardinals. At the BIG EAST Championships, he finished thirteenth in the 100-fly in a time of 49.59. On the final day of competition, Lopez doubled the 200-back and 200-fly. He finished third in the 200-back with a time of 1:45.99 and tenth in the 200-fly with a time of 1:49.35. He was named an All-BIG EAST performer. In dual meet action, Lopez recorded a first place finish in the 200-back and a second place finish in the 100-back against Pitt. He also scored vital points in the upset of Indiana with a second place finish in the 200-back and a fifth place finish in the 100-fly.
Freshman: Juan Lopez made an immediate impact upon joining the Cardinals in January. During the BIG EAST Championships, he competed in the 100- and 200-fly as well as the 200- back. He finished fourth-best in the 100-fly, touching at 48.73. In the 200-fly, he recorded a B-cut time of 1:48.01 and finished in fourth place. Lopez swam a time of 1:46.16 in the 200-back, good enough for sixth place and a national B-cut. He recorded the best time for any Louisville swimmer in the 100- back against Virginia Tech and Indiana with a time of 52.1.
