Kipruto Crushes 3000m Record to Open PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational
January 30, 2026 | Track & Field
The freshman won the event with a blistering time of 7:49.54 to set a new program, freshman, and meet record.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville track & field teams opened the sixth annual PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational on Friday at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center,
In his first competition since setting the men's 5000m school record on Dec. 6, Elsingi Kipruto stole the show once again, winning a hotly contested men's 3000m with a blistering time of 7:49.54 to set a new Louisville program and freshman record as well as the meet record.
The time took nearly 10 seconds off the previous school record of 7:59.60 that was set by Ian Kibiwot in 2024, while also ranking just outside the top 10 nationally and fourth in the ACC among times entering the weekend.
The Cardinals also got an event victory in the women's long jump from Eve Divinity, who tied her own personal record with a mark of 6.34m (20-9.75) on her final attempt of the competition. The San Jose State transfer also won the C section of the women's 200m by clocking a season-best time of 24.28 that moves her up to seventh in the Louisville record books. Synclair Savage joined Divinity on the podium with a leap of 6.30m (20-8), her second time over the 20-foot mark this season.
Ty McPhail captured the third win of the day for the Cardinals in the men's pole vault, recording a final clearance of 5.27m (17-3.5) to finish in a tie for the top spot.
A trio of Cardinals recorded top-10 times in program history in the men's 800m, as Ethan Brouw moved to second in the Louisville record book with a time of 1:47.97 to lead the way. Brendan Ruggles notched a personal record of 1:51.87 that ranks sixth, while JB Terrill recorded a personal best of 1:52.02 to move into a tie for seventh.
The Cards also saw a pair of solid performances in the women's 3000m from Nancy Chepleting and Maddie Seaby, as Chepleting claimed the bronze with a time of 9:21.23 that ranks fifth in Louisville history while Seaby crossed the line in a personal best of 9:35.43 to move to seventh all-time.
In the men's long jump, Miller Jones earned a runner-up finish with a personal record while also etching his name into the program record books, posting a mark of 7.50m (24-7.25) that ties him for 10th in Louisville history.
The Cards also found success in their first combined events action of the indoor season, as Maya Follmer set a new personal best in the women's pentathlon with a total of 3,686 points. Over the course of the five events, Follmer posted personal bests in the 800m (2:21.60), long jump (5.82m/19-1.25), and shot put (9.36m/30-8.5) to hold her spot at fifth in the all-time rankings at Louisville.
KJ Byrd also contested the first four events of the men's heptathlon, leading the pack after the first day of the competition with a total of 3,363 points while setting personal records in the 60m (6.97) and shot put (14.05m/46-1.25). The sophomore will conclude the competition tomorrow with the 60m hurdles, pole vault, and 1000m as he looks to build off a stellar 2025 campaign that saw him earn All-American honors in the event.
