Alyssa Zabala earns her sixth career shutout victory
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville softball team closed out the home portion of the season with a 2-0 victory over No. 6/7 Florida State Sunday evening at Ulmer Stadium. Junior Alyssa Zabala pitched a complete game shutout, the sixth of her career.
UofL improves to 24-23 (7-14 ACC) while the Seminoles fall to (42-7, 16-2 ACC).
The Cardinals managed to get on the board during the home half of the first as Char Lorenz laced a ball to right field for a triple to get the offense started. Bri Despines did her job laying down a sacrifice bunt allowing Lorenz to showcase her speed and slide into home to give UofL an early 1-0 advantage.
FSU threatened to score in the second due to a leadoff single by Katie Dack while Shelby McKenzie reached on a fielder's choice to put a runner in scoring position for the Noles. The Cards flashed some leather however, turning a double play to clear the base paths. Lorenz made a diving catch in left field to take away a hit and end the inning to keep the Seminoles at bay.
Louisville added to its lead in the fourth as Despines reached safely for the second time in the game with an infield single to begin the inning. A sacrifice bunt by Camryn Lookadoo moved Despines into scoring position with one out in the inning. Despines came around to score due to a fielding error by the Seminoles to extend the lead to 2-0.
Despines was the offensive catalyst on the night, tallying one hit and an RBI in the win.
Zabala (9-9) earned the win in a dominant performance in the circle, only giving up four hits to go along with two strikeouts in the game. Makenna Reid (3-2) took the loss for Florida State after pitching two innings and giving up one run on one hit and two strikeouts.
The Cardinals will wrap-up the regular season with a three-game series at Pittsburgh next weekend with game one of the series slated for Thursday, May 1 at 6 p.m. ET. Thursday and Friday's games will be broadcast on ACCNX and Saturday's game is airing nationally on ACCN.
