The Cards are now 20-16 on the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Chelsea Mack and Taylor Monroe each recorded a pair of hits as the the University of Louisville softball team dropped Wednesday night's game 8-3 against the University of Kentucky in the Battle of the Bluegrass.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 20-16.
The Cards got out to a hot start in the top of the first with a double play connection between Ally Alexander, Easton Lotus and Maddi Grant, which brought the offense back out onto the field. With Alexander up to bat and Chelsea Mack on second base, Alexander doubled to left center to score Mack for the first run of the game. After Camryn Lookadoo reached first on an error, Alexander scored the second run of the night.
The second and third innings were quick and highlighted by Monroe's double play to get the last two outs of the second inning. In the top of the third, Alyssa Zabala pitched a 1-2-3 inning to bring Louisville's offense back onto the field but the Cards unable to score any runs.
In the fourth inning, Monroe lit a match for her team by hitting her second home run of the season, putting the Cards up 3-1.
Sam Booe came in to relieve Zabala in the top of the fifth. Zabala did not allow an earned run in three innings of work and let up only one run in the second. With one out and the bases loaded for Kentucky, Booe grabbed two big strikeouts, but allowed the tying run to cross home. After that, Lindsey Mullen was sent into the circle for the remainder of the fifth.
Neither team scored in the sixth inning, so the Cards looked to rally going into the seventh.
In the top of the seventh, Mullen allowed two more Wildcat runs before Zabala re-entered. UK dropped in a bases-clearing triple to claim an 8-3 lead and Brooke Gray came in to close it out for the Cards and end Kentucky's scoring.
Lindsey Mullen took the loss, falling to 2-2 on the season. Kentucky's Sarah Haendiges grabbed the win, moving to 8-3 on the season.
The Cards will return to Ulmer Stadium this weekend in a double-header against Oakland on Saturday, April 5. The first pitch is slated for 1 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ACCNX.
