Louisville Drops Nail-Biter Against Notre Dame

The Cards will face the Irish tomorrow at 12 pm for a chance at the series win
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville softball team came up short in the second game of the series against Notre Dame (11-11) with a final score of 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium. UofL moves to 15-7 on the season, with senior Sam Booe taking the loss for a 4-2 record.
Following an efficient three up, three down top of the first, Louisville got to work quickly in the bottom half of the frame. Easton Lotus singled to kick off the Cards offense, and Chelsea Mack knocked a bunt for a single. A Char Lorenz double allowed Lotus to score, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
The Irish rallied in the top of the second, taking advantage of a hit by pitch and a single, but Cards ace Alyssa Zabala secured three straight outs to escape the inning with no damage done.
Louisville launched another scoring burst in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a lead-off double from Bri Despines. Maddi Grant followed up with a single to drive in Despines and strengthen the Cards lead at 2-0.
Notre Dame clawed back a run in the top of the fifth, loading the bases on a Louisville throwing error and back-to-back singles by Mickey Winchell and Emily Tran. Addison Amaral singled to put a run on the board for the Irish, bringing the tally to 2-1.
With a solo shot in the top of the sixth, Notre Dame's Anna Holloway tied up the score at 2-2. The Irish struck again in the top of the sixth, driving in another run on a single from Rachel Allen to put the Cards down 3-2 going into the last frame of regulation play.
Ally Alexander poked a single into right to start off the bottom of the seventh, and Lorenz extended the effort by drawing a two-out walk to put two runners on. Ultimately, Louisville was unable to capitalize, dropping their second ACC game 3-2 to the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame's right-handed starter Kami Kamzik rises to a 3-3 record with the win.
The Cards will play their final game of the series against Notre Dame on Sunday, March 9 with the first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. (ET) at Ulmer Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ACCNX.
