Cards Drop Match to No. 9 Stanford

Top-ranked Cardinal claim the back-and-forth match
STANFORD, Calif. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team put up a strong fight, but ultimately fell 4-2 to No. 9 Stanford in a close loss on Saturday night.Â
No. 9 Stanford 4, Louisville 2
Doubles competition was fierce between Louisville (6-12, 0-6 ACC) and Stanford (12-4, 4-2 ACC). Will Mayew and Miguel Avendaño were the first to finish with a 6-3 victory on Court 3. Shortly after, Stanford's tandem of Hudson Rivera and Nico Godsick took home a 6-3 win on Court 2.Â
The point came down to Court 1 where the competition was stiff. The pairs traded sets back-and-forth, forcing the court to be decided by a tiebreaker. After a gritty contest, the No. 37 Stanford duo of Samir Banerjee and Alex Razeghi took down Andre' Steinbach and Kosuke Nakanishi by a score of 7-6(9).
Singles play remained just as competitive. Court 1 was first to finish as Kyle Kang quickly claimed a 6-3, 6-0 win over Natan Rodrigues.Â
The Cards got on the board soon after as Piet Steveker earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory on Court 6.Â
Razeghi made quick work on Court 3, getting a 6-3, 6-1 victory minutes before Mayew finished on Court 2 with a 7-5, 6-2 win.Â
After the final two courts went into third sets, Stanford clinched the win with a 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2 win on Court 4.Â
Sophomore Kosuke Nakanishi was battling on his court as the final set went into a tiebreaker. Nakanishi and Harsh Hemang Parikh were trading points, but the match was abandoned at 7-5, 3-6, 6-6 with the tiebreaker being left at an impressive 8-8.Â
Louisville will head back home for a three-match weekend. The Cards will face No. 5 NC State on Friday at 4 p.m. with a Sunday doubleheader against No. 1 Wake Forest and crosstown rival Bellarmine beginning at noon.Â
