Cards Dominate Day One of Cardinal Classic

Louisville defeated CMU, 8-1 then run-ruled Longwood, 8-0
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville softball team earned two wins Friday night on the first day of the Cardinal Classic at Ulmer Stadium, advancing to 13-5 on the season. The Cards took down the Central Michigan Chippewas 8-1 and the Longwood Lancers 8-0. Â
Louisville will face Central Michigan once more on Saturday, then Northwestern twice to close out the Classic.Â
The Cards began Friday with a dominating performance against the Chippewas of Central Michigan, winning 8-1. Chippewa catcher Carly Sleeman started off the day with a solo shot to left center, giving Central Michigan the early 1-0 lead. Â
It was all Cards the rest of the way, with a single from Madison Pickens in the third inning, bringing in Chelsea Mack to tie the score at 1-1. A sac fly from Katie Thatcher in the fourth inning brought in Maddi Grant and gave the Cards a 2-1 lead. Char Lorenz walked in the bottom of the fourth inning to send Ally Alexander home, making the score 3-1. Â
Grant and Mack made the score 5-1 in the fifth inning with a couple of singles. A three-run triple in the bottom of the fifth inning from Lorenz brought in Mack, Lotus and Alexander to leave the score 8-1. Â
Senior pitcher Sam Booe picked up the win, moving to 3-1 on the year. Madelyn Wallace of Central Michigan falls to 0-2 on the season. Â
In Louisville's second matchup of the day, they faced off against the Longwood Lancers and came away victorious with an 8-0 win in five innings. Getting the win for Louisville was Alyssa Zabala, which brings her record to 6-1 on the year. Lancer starting pitcher Erin Kirkland dropped to 1-4 on the season. Â
Lorenz started the second game with a single to centerfield, to bring in Bri Despines and give Louisville a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. After Pickens took a walk, Ava Venturelli came up to bat and sent a three-run homer to left center to score Pickens and Lorenz, which padded the Cards lead 4-0. Â
In the bottom of the third, Lorenz sent a solo shot to centerfield, along with Venturelli singling in Pickens, to put Louisville on top 6-0. Finally, on a wild sequence, Pickens flew out to centerfield, which saw Despines advance to third and score courtesy of an error from the shortstop, along with Mack making the final score 8-0. Â
Louisville will return to action tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. to face Central Michigan, then play Northwestern at 5:30 p.m. on ACCNX. Â
