Cardinals Down Jacksonville 2-0 in Season Opener
August 22, 2024 | Men's Soccer
Josh Jones and Gage Guerra tallied first-half goals in the win.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The 24th-ranked University of Louisville men's soccer team opened up the 2024 season with a 2-0 victory over Jacksonville on Thursday at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Josh Jones and Gage Guerra notched first-half goals, while Harvey Sellers recorded his first clean sheet in a Louisville uniform.
Both sides spent the early stages of Thursday's match feeling the other out, with just five shots taken through the first 30 minutes.
However, the Cardinals quickly broke through for a pair of goals in a 61-second span late in the first half.
Jones tallied the first Louisville goal of the season in the 39th minute, heading home a cross from Noah De Blasis to break the scoreless contest.
One minute later, Sander Roed fired a shot toward the net that was deflected. However, the deflection landed at the feet of Guerra who slotted it into the back of the net to double the advantage.
Louisville's defense took care of the rest. The Cardinals allowed eight shots on the night, just two of which were on target. Sellers saved both shots at the net and earned the shutout in his Louisville debut.
The Cardinals had a 12-8 edge in shots and 6-5 in corner kicks.
Louisville will head on the road for its second match of the season, taking on Tulsa next Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET.
