Red Squad Prevails in High Octane Red & Black Scrimmage

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Red Squad won 25-18, 25-17, 25-12 and 27-25 at the University of Louisville volleyball Red and Black scrimmage Saturday afternoon at L&N Federal Credit Union Arena.

 Highlights included leading scorer Cara Cresse, who had 17 kills and four blocks. Anna DeBeer had 16 kills, 13 digs and seven blocks. Charitie Luper had 10 kills, hit .333 with five digs and four blocks. Hannah Sherman boarded seven kills and nine blocks. Setter Elle Glock had 36 assists and seven digs with freshman setter Nayelis Cabello adding 42 assists, 12 digs and an ace. Libero Elena Scott had 17 digs as did opposing libero Kamden Schrand.

In the first set, the Red team ran out to a 5-1 lead but the Black squad battled back to take the lead at 16-15. Red used a 10-3 down the stretch to take the set 25-18.

In the second set, Red got off to a swift start, going up 12-5. The scrappy Black team battled back to within three at 15-12. Red reorganized and ran off four straight powered by Payton Petersen's three kills to  go up 19-12 and cruised to a 25-17 win.

The third set followed the script of the first two with Red going up 12-6 early followed by a Black flurry of scoring to stay within five at 14-9. Red responded with a 13-3 run for the 25-12 win.

In the bonus fourth set, Black never trailed by more than three points but after tying at 22,23, 24,25, the Red team scored the final two points with the match ending on a block by Anna DeBeer.
