
Cardinals Fall Short in Series Opener Against No. 22/21 Clemson

Tigers plate three runs in the seventh to win the series opener 6-5
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville softball team fell 6-5 to No. 22/21 Clemson in its Atlantic Coast Conference series opener Friday night at Ulmer Stadium.

The Cardinals (25-22, 6-13 ACC) and the Tigers (32-15, 14-8 ACC) will continue the series Saturday at 1 p.m.

In a game that featured four lead changes, the teams combined for 10 runs in the final three innings as the Tigers prevailed 6-5. Vanessa Miller drove in a pair of runs and Katie Thatcher went 2-for-3 to lead the Cardinals at the plate. Alyssa Zabala (18-13) took the loss, going 6.2 innings and giving up six runs on nine hits with two strikeouts.

In the bottom of the first, Chelsea Mack was the first Cardinal to reach base with a single to the shortstop. Bailee Richardson doubled down the left field line to drive in Mack.

Clemson started off quickly in the top of the third with three straight singles. Zabala caught McKenzie Clark looking at her third strike for the first out of the inning. Shortstop Daisy Hess connected with Richardson at second base and Riley Frizell at first base for their second double play of the game to get out of the jam.

In the top of the fifth, Clemson scored its first run on a sacrifice fly by Alex Brown that drove in Julia Bomhardt. A double by Julia Knowler plated Arielle Oda and Maddie Moore to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead.

Louisville answered quickly, plating four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Kiley Goff started the inning with an infield single and Hess followed with a walk. Mack reached on an error on her sacrifice bunt that saw Goff score from second. Mack stole second to put runners in scoring position, to set up Frizell's two-run single to center field.

Clemson fought back in the top of the seventh, plating three runs. After a leadoff walk to Moore, Brown singled to set up Knowler's RBI double. With one out in the inning, Valerie Cagle was intentionally walked to load the bases and Lindsey Garcia's sacrifice fly scored Brown for the tying run. Alia Logoleo's RBI single put the Tigers on top 6-5.

Millie Thompson (6-5) picked up the win, allowing one earned run on two hits, striking out two in three innings. Knowler went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead Clemson at the plate.

• Prior to Saturday's game, Louisville will honor seniors Mia Forsythe, Riley Frizell, Paige Geraghty, Kiley Goff, Daisy Hess, Gabby Holloway, Vanessa Miller and Bailee Richardson as part the Cardinals' senior day festivities.
• Louisville turned its 19th and 20th double plays of the season. That total stands tied for seventh on the program's single season list. The school record is 25, set in 2019.
• Maddi Grant has reached base safely via a hit or walk in the last six games.
