Zabala tosses a two-hitter; Grant, Frizell homer in Louisville’s 2-1 win
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Louisville softball team defeated North Carolina 2-1 in their Atlantic Coast Conference series opener Friday evening at Anderson Stadium.
The Cardinals (25-19, 6-10 ACC) and the Tar Heels (28-15, 8-11 ACC) will conclude the series with a doubleheader Saturday at 2 p.m. The weekend schedule has been altered due to potential inclement weather on Sunday.
Â
Alyssa Zabala earned her league-best 18th victory of the season, surrendering one earned run and scattering two hits and striking out two in a complete game effort. Maddi Grant went 2-for-2 with a home run to lead the Cardinals at the plate. Riley Frizell also delivered her team-best 12 homer of the season in the win.
Â
The Cards jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning when Frizell launched a two-out home run over the right field fence. Louisville's offense continued in the second inning as Grant smashed a one-out solo shot for her second home run in as many games to make the score 2-0.
Â
Louisville had a chance to add to its lead in the top of the fourth when Gabby Holloway delivered a leadoff hit and was lifted for pinch runner Mia Forsythe who moved to second on Grant's sacrifice bunt. Katie Thatcher was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs, but all three runners were stranded.
Â
Zabala took a one-hit shutout into the bottom of the seventh inning before Carlie Myrtle's two-out homer pulled the Tar Heels within a run, but a groundout ended the game.
