Cards score six late-inning runs, but could not overcome Indiana’s early lead

The Hoosiers (23-9) jumped to an early lead with a pair of runs in the second. Avery Parker started the frame with a hit, an error on Aly VanBrandt's sacrifice bunt moved her to third and another Louisville miscue put Indiana on the scoreboard. Cassidy Kettleman RBI double extended the lead to 2-0.

With the bases loaded and no outs in the second inning, the game entered a lightning delay that lasted just over an hour, and when it resumed, the Hoosiers picked up where they left off, using an infield single, a walk and a two-run double to take a 6-0 lead.

Indiana tacked on two more runs in the fourth when Brianna Copeland singled and scored on a double by Minnick who then crossed the plate on a hit by Sarah Stone. The fifth inning saw another Hoosier run courtesy of Copeland's RBI single which extened the lead to 9-0. Â

The Cardinals began to chip away in the fifth inning, using four hits and an error to put up a five-spot. Katie Thatcher got the offense going with a leadoff walk. Bailee Richardson followed with a single and Ally Alexander walked to load the bases for Kiley Goff's RBI hit. An error saw Richardson safe at the plate. Two outs later, Riley Frizell cleared the bases with a three-run double to make the score 9-5.

In the sixth inning, the Hoosiers capitalized on three hits and an error to plate two more runs, pushing the lead to 11-5.

Louisville got a run back in the home half of the sixth when Richardson walked and Alexander doubled to bring up Goff, who singled Richardson home. In the seventh inning, Hess earned a leadoff walk, but the Cards would get no closer and the final score remained 11-6.

Alyssa Zabala (13-7) took the loss, allowing five runs, two earned, on four hits. Goff went 2-for-2 with a walk, two RIBs and a scored a run to lead the Cardinals at the plate. Frizell finished the game with three RBIs.

Copeland (12-5) picked up the win, giving up three runs, one earned, on two hits and striking out three in five innings of work. She also went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs to help lead the Hoosiers offensively.
