February 24, 2024 | Track & Field
The Louisville men finished seventh as a team with 48 points, while the women’s squad placed ninth with a total of 34 points.
BOSTON, Mass. – Jayden Ulrich won the ACC title in the women's shot put on Saturday afternoon as the University of Louisville track & field teams wrapped up competition at the ACC Indoor Championships.
The junior's mark of 17.45m (57-3) on her first attempt of the competition proved to be the winner, giving the Cardinals their first women's shot put champion at the indoor conference meet since 2018 when Emmonnie Henderson won the title.
After three days of competition in Boston, the Louisville men placed seventh in the team standings with a total of 48 points, while the women's team earned ninth-place with 34 points, 31 of which came on the final day of competition.
The Cardinals saw ten athletes earn All-ACC distinction by finishing in the top six individuals in their respective events, while getting 16 personal-best performances on the weekend.
Seeded in a tie for fifth entering the competition, Natalie Lark cleared a personal-best bar of 4.23m (13-10.5) to finish as the runner-up in the women's pole vault. Her silver medal marks the sixth straight year that a Louisville woman has placed on the podium in the event at the ACC Indoor Championships.
Alba Cuns Iglesias also found her into the top three in the women's triple jump with a personal-best mark, leaping 12.99m (42-7.5) to place third on a day where all four of her legal jumps eclipsed her previous best in the event.
The Cardinals also saw a school record fall in the men's 3000m, as Ian Kibiwot finished as one of 14 men under eight minutes with a time of 7:59.60, besting the previous program record time of 8:00.98 by Cory Thorne, which had stood since 2008. The record is the fourth of Kibiwot's Louisville career and his second of the season after breaking the men's indoor 5000m record at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Feb. 10.
Kiyah Yeast earned her second consecutive Second Team All-ACC honor in the women's 200m, placing sixth in 23.77 after placing eighth in the women's 60m roughly an hour earlier with a time of 7.57.
The Cardinals were also well-represented in the 4x400m relays with a pair of sixth-place finishes as the men's team of Trevor Holbrook, Jaylen Cole, Brenton Shippy, and Ryan Farrell clocked a time of 3:16.02 and the women's squad of McKenzie Bell, Yeast, Taylor Boggess, and Ruby Nwosu finished in 3:42.76.
After placing eighth in the men's weight throw on Thursday afternoon, Noah Koch earned another berth in the finals of the men's shot put, securing a seventh-place finish with a heave of 17.07m (56-0).
The Cardinals will now await the selection of athletes for the NCAA Indoor Championships, which will also take place in Boston, Mass. at the TRACK at New Balance from Mar. 8-9. Athletes who finish with a top-16 mark nationally in their respective events will be named to the championship roster on Feb. 27 after the conclusion of all conference championship meets.
