Cards Shut Out Florida Gulf Coast 7-0 to Stay Undefeated

Cards improve to 5-0 with four shutouts on the weekend
FT. MYERS, Fla. – The University of Louisville softball team defeated host Florida Gulf Coast 7-0 to wrap up the FGCU Kickoff Classic Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 5-0 marking the best start since 2012.

Freshman Brooke Gray (2-0) picked up the win, holding the Eagles scoreless on one hit and three strikeouts in 2.2 innings of relief. Izzy Harrison got the start and kept the FGCU off the scoreboard, giving up only one hit and striking out three in 3.1 innings. Gabby Holloway also combined on the shutout, retiring all three batters she faced in the seventh inning.
Riley Frizell went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBIs to lead the team at the plate. Vanessa Miller also had two hits including home run and Kiley Goff added a double for the Cards.

Following a scoreless first inning, the Cardinals broke through in the top of the second inning when Riley Frizell took the first pitch of the frame over the right field fence for her first home run of the season. Two outs later, Vanessa Miller also connected on her first homer of the year with a shot over right field to give Louisville a 2-0 lead.

After capitalizing on three miscues to tack on another run in the fourth, Louisville used five hits, including a pair of doubles and a triple to put up a four-spot in the fifth. Chelsea Mack led off the frame with a single and Daisy Hess tripled her home. Goff's RBI double plated Hess. Bailee Richardson walked to put two on for Frizell's two-run double which brought the score to 7-0..

Angelina Bonilla (1-1) took the loss after giving up two earned runs on two hits and striking out three in 3.0 innings. Nikki Gibson registered both of the Eagles' hits in the games.

Louisville will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Miami for a midweek matchup against FIU.
