The Cardinals lost 3-1 in the opening round of the ACC Championship.
CLEMSON, S.C. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team lost 3-1 at No. 7 Clemson in the opening round of the ACC Championship on Wednesday night.
The loss ends the 2024 campaign for the Cardinals, who finish 6-7-4 overall.
It was a tale of two halves on Wednesday night in Clemson. The opening half saw both sides put together strong defensive efforts resulting in a scoreless contest through 45 minutes.
However, the match quickly flipped to an offensive outburst immediately after the halftime break.
Clemson (12-2-3) was awarded a penalty for a foul on the edge of the box in the 47th minute, and the Tigers converted from the spot to start the scoring.
Louisville's answer came just 58 seconds later though. A header clearance attempt from the Tigers landed just outside the box and TJ Kahoalii took the shot off the volley and beat the keeper inside the far post to level the match at one.
The match stayed tied at one for the next 10 minutes before Clemson grabbed the lead back with a goal off a corner kick in the 58th minute. The Tigers then doubled their advantage with a goal two minutes later.
Chasing a pair of goals over the final 30 minutes, Louisville nearly got one back at the 66-minute mark. A perfect cross found a sliding Josh Jones right in front of goal, but the Clemson keeper was up to the task of keeping it out.
Bilal Camara and Ola Arntsen each put shots on target that required saves as well, and Arntsen had another shot that whistled just over the crossbar.
Ultimately though, the Cardinals were unable to break through and cut the match back to a one-goal deficit.
AJ Piela matched a career high with nine saves on the evening.
Clemson outshot the Cardinals 16-12 on the night and held a 9-4 corner kick advantage.
