Four Singles Advance in Main Draw of ITA Regionals

Avendaño, Steveker, Nakanishi and Mayew advance to the Round of 32
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Four victories in the singles main draw highlight the day for UofL men's tennis at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships hosted by Purdue.
Sophomore Miguel Avendaño claimed victory over Francisco Lamas in straight sets, winning his opening singles match 6-2, 7-6 (7-2). He was the only Cardinal to win his match in two sets on Friday afternoon.
Piet Steveker defeated Andrew Hayward of Ball State in three sets, winning the first 6-4, dropping the second 2-6, but battling back to win the third 6-4.
Both sophomore Kosuke Nakanishi and junior Will Mayew won their matches in come-from-behind fashion. Nakanishi beat an in-state foe from Kentucky, Charlelie Cosnet, 5-7, 6-1, 7-5. Mayew won his match over Nathaniel Webster from Ball State 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Louisville dropped three tight doubles matches in the main draw on Friday. Avendaño and sophomore Enrique Peña and Steveker/Nakanishi both lost their matches 8-6. Russell Lokko and Evan Duggal fell 8-5 in their doubles match.
The players remaining in the main draw of singles are anticipated to play two matches on Saturday, the Round of 32 and Round of 16.
