Cardinals Set Four Meet Records at Bellarmine Open
January 19, 2024 | Track & Field
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville track & field teams competed at the Bellarmine Open on Friday at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center in Louisville.
Along with setting four new meet records, the Cardinals claimed seven event victories to go with 19 total podium finishes, while also seeing 14 new individual personal-best performances.
"I was really impressed with the way we competed today," said director of track & field and cross country Joe Franklin. "We got standout performances from Alba Cuns Iglesias, Soledad Jean, and Noah Koch, and we continue to progress well as a group in the early stages of the season. We are excited to be back here next weekend for the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitaitonal, which should provide us with even more opportunity to grow as we compete against some of the best in the NCAA."
The Cardinals began the day by taking the top two spots in the women's long jump as Cuns Iglesias recorded a new personal-best in the event of 5.60m (18-4.5) to win while Maya Follmer placed second with a mark of 5.47m (17-11.5).
Cuns Iglesias then doubled back later in the day with a victory in the women's triple jump, setting a new meet record of 12.61m (41-4.5) in the process as Louisville athletes made up four of the top five finishers.
Sophia Day posted a personal-best of 12.05m (39-6.5) to place second, Rachel Darden finished third with a mark of 11.95m (39-2.5), and Riley Burger rounded out the top five with a jump of 11.73m (38-6).
The Cardinals were also responsible for setting new meet records in both the men's and women's 60m as Jaylen Cole and Olivia Jenkins each blazed to event victories.
Cole won the men's 60m in 6.83 and Brenton Shippy placed fifth in 6.96, while Jenkins clocked a time of 7.56 to win the women's 60m.
Both Cole and Jenkins also finished on the podium in the 200m, as Cole finished as the runner-up in the men's 200m in 21.43, while Jenkins won the women's 200m in 25.07 with McKenzie Bell finishing fourth in 25.35.
Bell also earned an event victory of her own in the women's 400m in 55.85, while Taylor Boggess took the bronze with a personal-best time of 57.00.
The final meet record of the day for the Cardinals was set by Ty McPhail in the men's pole vault, who continued his stellar start to his junior season with a final clearance of 5.22m (17-1.5).
The women's invitational pole vault was also kind to Louisville with a pair of personal-best performances, as Natalie Lark cleared 4.12m (13-6.25) to place third and Lydia Stuart finished fourth with a mark of 3.82m (12-6.25).
Koch made his Louisville debut in the men's weight throw after transferring in from Indiana, posting the eighth-best mark in school history on his way to a second-place finish with a mark of 19.98m (65-6.75). Along with Koch's silver finish, Erik Fertig finished fourth in the event with a best throw of 18.56m (60-10.75).
Jean also finished second in the women's high jump, clearing a final bar of 1.75m (5-8.75) as she continues to stake her claim as an All-ACC contender.
The Cardinals closed out the field events with a trio of third-place finishes with Adam Axelrod leaping to a mark of 6.65m (21-10) in the men's long jump, Jorge Contreras Nazario posting a heave of 16.53m (54-2.75) in the men's shot put, and Zoe Yeast finishing with a toss of 17.32m (56-10) in the women's weight throw.
On the track, Sydney Partyka finished as the runner-up in the women's mile with a time of 5:04.90, while Jacob Puhalla and Ryan Farrell finished fourth and fifth in the men's mile with respective times of 4:17.26 and 4:18.35.

The Cardinals will return to action on Jan. 26-27 for the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational.
