Louisville took a 2-1 loss on Friday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – For the first time on the season, the fifth-ranked University of Louisville men's soccer team came up on the wrong end of the scoreboard, losing 2-1 to Virginia Tech on Friday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
The loss is the first for Louisville (4-1-1, 0-1-1 ACC), which was unbeaten through five matches.
The Cardinals looked in command early, netting a goal less than six minutes into the contest. Quinton Elliot fired from outside the top left of the box and found the upper right corner of the net to give Louisville an early advantage.
However, Virginia Tech (1-2-3, 1-0-1) took control from there. The Hokies outshot the Cardinals 9-5 in the opening half, the last of which beat Alex Svetanoff in goal to level the match at one in the 43rd minute.
Virginia Tech held a 9-5 advantage in shots once again in the second half, again finding a goal in the closing minutes. The Hokies capitalized off a Louisville turnover in their attacking third and tallied the game-winner in the 88th minute.
Louisville had a late opportunity in the final seconds, but Josh Jones' header was saved at the left post.
The Cardinals were outshot 18-10 on the evening and Virginia Tech held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
Louisville heads on the road Tuesday night to take on Evansville. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
