Payton Chosen by San Francisco on Day Three of MLB Draft

The junior was selected in the 11th round on Tuesday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville junior catcher Jack Payton was selected by the San Francisco Giants on day three of the 2023 Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday.
Payton (Round 11, Pick 330, San Francisco Giants) joins three Louisville players that were taken on Monday – Christian Knapczyk (Round 5, Pick 161, Cleveland Guardians), Tate Kuehner (Round 7, Pick 212, Milwaukee Brewers) and Ryan Hawks (Round 8, Pick 247, Seattle Mariners).
Payton led the Cardinals in hitting for the second straight season in 2023, finishing the spring with a .374 batting average. He tallied 10 doubles and set a career-high with 12 home runs in 48 games. For his Louisville career, Payton held a .356 average with 35 doubles and 97 driven in. The junior was one of three finalists for the Buster Posey Award this spring, recognizing the nation's top catcher.
The Louisville baseball program has had at least three players selected in the MLB Draft in all 17 years with Dan McDonnell at the helm.
