April 07, 2023 | Softball
Cards fall 13-6 to Notre Dame as the Irish take the series
Â
Notre Dame (23-10-1, 7-6-1) scored in each of the first four innings to build a 13-3 lead before the Cardinals tallied three unanswered runs, but Louisville (24-12, 9-4 ACC) could not overcome Notre Dame's offensive production as the Irish clinched the series.
Â
After the Irish plated three runs behind Karina Gaskins' three-run homer in the top of the first, Louisville countered in the home half of the inning when Otis led off the game with a bunt single and Hannah File walked. Taylor Roby was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Makayla Hurst who was also hit by a pitch to send Otis home.
Â
The second inning saw Notre Dame use three hits and an error to take an 8-1 lead.
Â
Louisville battled back with a pair runs in the bottom of the second. Back-to-back hits by Otis and Sarah Gordon and another walk issued to File loaded the bases for Roby's two-run single to make the score 8-3.
Â
Notre Dame tacked on two runs in the third and three more in the fourth to extend its lead to 13-3.
Â
Louisville's offense broke through again in the home half of the fourth when Gordon's RBI double plated Paige Geraghty and File's sacrifice fly sent Gordon home. The Cards added the final run in the fifth when Otis' fourth single of the game brought home Madison 'Pickle' Winkler who had earned a two-out walk.
Â
Korbe Otis went 4-for-4 – tying a school record for hits in a game – and scored three runs while driving in one and Taylor Roby had two-run single to help lead the Cardinals at the plate.
Â
Roby (7-5) took the loss, allowing six earned runs on six hits and striking out one in 1.1 innings.
Â
Micaela Kastor (6-2) earned the win, giving up three earned runs on five hits and striking out five in 5.1 innings of relief. Kloss went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs while Gaskins when 2-for-3 with two runs and four RBIs to pace Notre Dame offensively
