Taylor Roby now owns school record for season and career homers, Otis delivers first career grand slam to lift Cards to 5-3 win at Virginia
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Taylor Roby delivered her school-record 18th home run of the season to help the University of Louisville softball team beat Virginia 5-3 in the opening game of an Atlantic Coast Conference series Friday evening at Palmer Park.

With her 18th homer of the season, Roby extended her career total to 58 – also a program best. Sophomore Korbe Otis went 3-for-4 with a grand slam to help led the Cardinals at the plate. Freshman Alyssa Zabala (13-6) earned the win, allowing three runs on three hits in a complete game effort.

Virginia jumped to a 2-0 lead behind Katie Goldberg's two-run homer in the bottom of the first.

The fourth inning featured five Louisville runs starting with Roby's shot over the center field fence to put her team on the scoreboard. Sarah Gordon followed with a hit and walks to Daisy Hess and Makayla Hurst loaded the bases for Otis, who sent a two-out home run over left center field for her first career grand slam.

After surrendering two runs on two hits in the first inning, Zabala and the Cardinals' defense retired the next 17 batters before Abby Weaver connected on a two-out home run in the seventh to make the score 5-3.

The Cardinals (30-14, 11-4 ACC) and the Cavaliers (29-16, 8-11 ACC) will meet again on Saturday at 6 p.m. in game two of the series.

- Roby is now tied for second with Courtney Moore (2004-07) on Louisville's career list for RBIs with 174. Chelsea Bemis (2008-11) owns the record with 191.
- With a walk in the game, Roby extends her career total to 111 moving her into a tie for second with Bemis on Louisville's all-time list. Katie Keller (2011-14) holds the record with 191.
- Otis has now reached base safely via a hit in 41 of Louisville's 44 games this season
