Cardinals Down Musketeers 7-0
March 12, 2023 | Women's Tennis
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville swept Xavier in straight sets to win 7-0 Sunday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
With the win, the Cardinals move to 8-6 on the season while the Musketeers fall to 7-5.
"Normally, 7-0 wins happen in January," said UofL head coach Mark Beckham. "I feel good about getting that this time of the year. Plus, as a team, they're ahead of us as far as ranking. That's always good. We play such a high-level of tennis in the ACC, when we play a team like Xavier, there is not much they can surprise us with. I feel like we were prepared, and it was a good match for us. Hopefully we can build on that momentum and beat Virginia Tech on Friday."
UofL took the doubles point as Rhea Verma and Andre Di Palma beat Imani Graham and Anna Roggenburk 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. Cici Xin and Jamilah Snells clinched the doubles point with a 6-0 win at No. 3 singles over Abigail Siminski and Blessing Nwaozuzu.
The Cards took the 1-0 lead into singles and Verma quickly earned UofL another point after downing Roggenburk 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Maria Campos quickly followed suit, taking the 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles over Nwaozuzu. At No. 1 singles, Di Palma clinched the match for the Cards after winning 6-3, 6-1 against Graham. Snells continued the momentum for UofL winning 6-2, 6-3 over Kat Lyman and Tyra Richardson added another point to the board with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Siminski. Sasha Gorchanyuk came from behind to take the first set 7-6 (7-5) and swept the second set 6-0 to give the Cards the final point.
Louisville hits the road in a return to Atlantic Coast Conference play to take on Virginia Tech on Friday and Virginia on Sunday.
