Roby Sets School Career Home Run Record, Leads Louisville in Saturday Sweep at UCF Knights Classic

Cards beat Columbia 8-2, Bradley 8-0 on day two of the UCF Knights Classic
ORLANDO, Fla. – Taylor Roby had three hits on the day, including her school record-setting 43rd career home run to help lead the University of Louisville softball team to an 8-2 win over Columbia and an 8-0 victory over Bradley on day two of the UCF Knights Classic at the UCF Softball Complex.

On the day, Roby went 3-for-6 with a home run, a double and five RBIs. The graduate student from Mt. Washington, Ky., also picked up a win in the circle against Columbia.

The Cardinals (8-4) will close out the weekend on Sunday when they take on Purdue at 11 a.m. and No. 23/25 UCF at 1 p.m.

Louisville 8 – Columbia 2
In the first game of the day, freshman Sarah Gordon went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI and graduate senior Hannah File also went 2-for-4 to help pace the Cardinals who tallied a season-high 10 hits en route to an 8-2 win over Columbia (0-4).

The Lions jumped to an early lead, using three hits and an error to score a pair of runs in the top of the first inning.

The Cardinals answered in the home half of the second inning when Gordon connected on a leadoff double to centerfield and Korbe Otis was hit by a pitch to set up Elana Ornelas' RBI double. Ally Alexander earned a walk to load the bases for Paige Geraghty's sacrifice fly which evened the score at 2-2.

The score remained knotted at 2-2 through the next three innings before the Cardinals capitalized on five hits, a walk and an error to put up a six-spot in the sixth. Geraghty led off with a hit and proceeded to steal second. An error allowed Daisy Hess to reach and sent Geraghty to third for Makayla Hurst's two-run single. Roby followed with an RBI hit and a single by File put two runners on. Gordon singled home pinch runner Cassie Grizzard. After Otis walked to load the bases, Ornelas was hit by a pitch to plate File. Vanessa Miller's sacrifice fly made the score 8-2.

Roby (3-1) picked up the win in the circle, allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits and striking out four in 6.0 innings and helped her cause at the plate with an RBI single. Sophomore Sam Booe retired all three batters she faced in the seventh inning.

In the Cardinals' second game of the day, Taylor Roby registered her 43rd career home run – a two-run shot in the third inning to establish a new school career home run record. She also added a two-run double to finish game with four RBIs.

The teams played through two scoreless innings before Louisville broke through with three runs in the third. Hess reached on an error and stole second to move into scoring position for Otis who singled her home. Otis proceeded to swipe second to set up Roby's blast over the fence in right centerfield. Â

Louisville's offense continued with three more runs in the fourth. Otis' RBI single scored Ornelas who had reached on an error and Roby's two run double sent home Hess who had walked and Otis to make the score 6-0.

A pair of bases-loaded walks issued to Hess an Otis in the fifth gave Louisville the 8-0 win.

Freshman Alyssa Zabala (4-1) picked up the win, scattering four hits and tying a career high with six strikeouts. Junior Gabby Holloway combined on the shutout allowing one hit and registering one strikeout. Otis went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs – she finished the day batting 3-for-4 with three walks, three runs and two RBIs.
