February 10, 2023 | Women's Lacrosse
Perroni led the team with two goals
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Nicole Perroni scored two goals as the University of Louisville Lacrosse team opened the season with a close 5-4 loss to No. 9 Denver Friday afternoon at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
"I thought it was a great lacrosse game today," said head coach Scott Teeter. "I thought the first half, we did enough on the offensive end to build up a lead. I thought our defense and Sara (Addeche), our goalie, played outstanding all game long."
With the loss, Louisville falls to 0-1 to open the season, while No. 9 Denver moves to 1-0.
Louisville got off to a fast start offensively, converting three of its four shots in the first period into goals. Nicole Perroni got the Cardinals on the board, scoring on a drive to the net with 10:29 left in the first quarter. Freshman Negai Nakazawa, in her first ever start in the red and black, scored on an assist from Hannah Morris with 2:26 left in the first quarter to put the Cards up 2-0. Perroni was able to knock in her second goal with eight seconds left on the clock to finish the first quarter.
UofL's fourth and final goal came from a free position attempted by Lauren Figas with a little under two and a half minutes left in the half. The Pioneers were able to get on the board with two minutes left on a shot by Lauren Black.
The only point scored in the third quarter came from a free position shot by Lauren Black with three minutes remaining to cut the Cardinal lead to 4-2.
Denver scored three times in the fourth quarter to take the lead 5-4.
Sara Addeche recorded seven saves in her first start of the season.
Louisville is back in action on Sunday, Feb. 12 at noon E.T. as they host No. 25 Colorado at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
