No. 3 Cardinals Beat Clemson 3-1

CLEMSON, S.C. -- Opposite Aiko Jones had 15 kills, hitting .520 with two aces and two blocks to lead the No. 3-ranked Louisville volleyball team to a 3-1 win at Clemson.
The Cardinals improve to 21-3 and 12-2 in ACC play with the 19-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-15 win. Anna DeBeer added 14 kills, two aces while Charite Luper and Cara Cresse each added 10 kills and a block with Luper landing two aces on the Tigers. Setter Elle Glock had 52 assists and three aces while libero Elena Scott led the match with 12 digs.
Clemson moves to 15-10 on the year and 6-7 in the league. The win in the first set was the first set the Tigers have taken off Louisville since 2018. Clemson hit .294 with six aces and six blocks. Kateryna Tkachenko hit a torrid .818 with nine kills on 11 swings and no errors. Adria Powell zinged three aces past the Cards and added six kills and four blocks.
The Cardinals return home this coming weekend and will host Duke on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. and North Carolina on Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. both at L&N Federal Credit Union Arena. The match against UNC will serve as Senior Day for the Cardinals.
Set-by-Set Recap
In the first set, the teams traded points until the Tigers put together an 8-4 run to take a 15-12 lead into the media timeout. The momentum continued as Clemson pulled ahead 19-13 before the Cards called timeout. Coming out of the break, there was more of the same as the Tigers used .375 hitting to keep the Cards at arms' length not to mention notching three aces and three blocks. UofL hit .258 with no blocks and no aces. Cara Cresse had five kills on five swings to lead the Cards' sputtering offense in the 25-19 loss. It is the first set the Cards have dropped to Clemson since 2018.
In the second set, Louisville pulled out to a 11-6 lead and then spread the lead to six at 19-13. Strong serving by Clemson's Adria Powell propelled the Tigers to a 4-0 run to pull to within three at 19-16 and force a Louisville timeout. Coming out of the break, the Cardinals responded with a three-point run to move the score to 22-18 and spark a Tiger timeout. At 23-22, a kill by Cara Cresse took the Cards to set point and a kill by Anna DeBeer pushed UofL to the win and tied the set score at one going into the break.
In the third set, UofL took the lead for good at 9-8 and after a pair of aces by Charitie Luper, the Tigers called timeout trailing by five at 19-14. The Cardinals went on a 7-1 run for the 25-18 win. UofL hit .423 in that set with six aces.
In the fourth set, UofL never trailed, taking a six-point lead at 16-10 on a Charitie Luper kill. When the score hit 21-13 on an ace by Anna DeBeer, Clemson called timeout. The Tigers would go on to score just two more as the Louisville rolled to a 25-15 win.
