LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team heads to No. 5 West Virginia for the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Sunday's kickoff from Morgantown is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET and will be televised on ESPN+.
ABOUT THE CARDINALS
The Cardinals secured a 4-3 victory over Dayton on Thursday in the opening round at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Josh Jones, David Boccuzzo and Bryce LeBel scored in the first half, while Brandon McManus netted the game-winner in the 64th minute.
Louisville is looking to reach the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time in program history and first since 2019, John Michael Hayden's first season as head coach.
SERIES HISTORY
Louisville leads the all-time series against West Virginia 4-2-1, but the two teams have not played since 2010 when both were members of the Big East. The Cardinals are 1-1 all-time in Morgantown.
CARDINALS EARN THIRD STRAIGHT NCAA TOURNAMENT BERTH
John Michael Hayden has the Cardinals in the postseason for the third consecutive season and fourth time in his five years at the helm.
Louisville is making its 15th overall NCAA appearance, all of which have come in the last 17 seasons. UofL is one of six programs (Indiana, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, Wake Forest) to make at least 15 of the last 17 tournaments.
The Cardinals are 17-13-2 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, 14-7-2 at home and 7-5-1 inside Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
LOUISVILLE BATTLE TESTED HEADING INTO NCAA TOURNAMENT
John Michael Hayden and his staff worked to create one of the toughest schedules in the country and the Cardinals will enter the NCAA Tournament as a battle tested group.
The Cardinals played nine matches this fall against teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament, in addition to two exhibition matches against teams that reached the postseason.
Louisville was 3-4-2 overall against NCAA Tournament teams, picking up wins against Kentucky and on the road at Pitt and No. 2 national seed Notre Dame.
ROED CLIMBING SINGLE-SEASON, CAREER ASSISTS CHART
Louisville midfielder Sander Roed had one of the top assist seasons in program history in 2022, tying for the seventh-most in program history with eight.
Roed surpassed that total with a pair of assists in the win over Dayton in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, giving him nine for the season and 22 for his career. The 22 assists move him into a tie for third all-time at Louisville and his total of nine this fall are the fourth-most in program history, two shy of the single-season record of 11.
Tim Kubel (2014-17) owns the program's career record with 26.
JONES AND ROED TEAM UP AGAIN FOR SET PIECE MAGIC
Louisville juniors Josh Jones and Sander Roed have formed a dynamic duo on set pieces since they arrived on campus for the 2021 season.
That pair struck again in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament against Dayton, with Roed finding Jones for opening goal on a corner kick in the 13th minute.
The goal was Jones' third of the season and eighth of his career. All eight goals in his career have been assisted by Roed, including three game-winners.
CARDINALS ON THE ATTACK EARLY
John Michael Hayden's team has one of the better offensive attacks in the country once again, averaging better than two goals per match.
The Cardinals have been especially good early in matches, having scored first in 14 of 20 matches this season. Louisville has gotten on the board in the first 10 minutes of three matches (UNC Greensboro, Kentucky, Virginia Tech) and the first 15 minutes of four others (Bellarmine, Syracuse, NC State, Dayton).
