November 19, 2023 | Men's Soccer
Louisville took a 1-0 defeat in Morgantown on Sunday.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team saw its season come to an end on Sunday with a 1-0 loss at No. 5 West Virginia.
Louisville closes out the season at 12-6-3 overall, the program's highest win total since finishing with 13 wins in the 2017 campaign.
The match was scoreless through the first 71 minutes, but both sides had scoring opportunities early.
Konstantinos Georgallides fired the first shot of the game less than two minutes into the match. However, his attempt from inside the box was hit over the bar. Gage Guerra then had a look in the 11th minute that was saved by the WVU keeper.
West Virginia's best first half scoring chance came in the 22nd minute. A dangerous header from in close was ticketed for the top right corner, but Alex Svetanoff fully extended to his right on a dive to deflect the shot away.
Three minutes later, it was the Cardinals with a threatening chance. David Boccuzzo had his shot blocked, but it ended up on the feet of Parker Forbes on the left side. With the keeper off his line, Forbes sent a low shot toward the center of the goal that was saved at the last opportunity by a West Virginia defender.
The match went to half scoreless and it was much of the same early in the second half.
Neither side got a shot off in the first 12 minutes of the second stanza until Quinton Elliot had his low driving shot saved.
West Virginia (15-2-4) didn't get its first second half shot until more than 19 minutes had passed, but the Mountaineers finally broke the scoreless contest in the 72nd minute with a shot from the top of the box that got inside the right post.
The Cardinals continued their attack toward the net looking for the equalizer over the final 18 minutes but were unable to find the goal they needed to keep their season alive.
West Virginia outshot the Cardinals 17-7 on the afternoon and held a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.
