Louisville registers its fourth straight shutout, stays undefeated at Trager Stadium this season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The fifth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team posted its fourth straight shutout with a 3-0 win over Central Michigan Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium. The Cardinals improve to 11-1 and 7-0 at home this season.
Â
Rylie Wollerton, Emilia Kaczmarczyk and Jane Ramsay had a goal apiece as Louisville tallied 11 corners and a season-high 22 shots on goal while the Cardinals' defense did not allow the Chippewas to record a shot in the contest in Louisville's fifth shutout of the season. Central Michigan (1-11) got a valiant effort by goalkeeper Katie Maxim who recorded 17 saves in the contest.
Â
Louisville struck in the sixth minute of the contest after a scramble in front of the cage resulted in Wollerton's first goal of the season.
Â
The Cards added another goal with under two minutes left in the first quarter. After earning the first corner of the game Izzy Bianco's initial shot was turned back by Maxim, the sophomore gathered the rebound and sent a feed to Kaczmarczyk who settled the ball and moved past a defender before firing a shot into the cage for her fifth goal of the season.
Â
Louisville took the 2-0 lead into halftime after peppering the Chippewas with 17 shots in the first half with Maxim turning back 11 of them.
Â
In the second half, the Cardinals continued to attack firing off 12 shots through the second and third quarters before Ramsay found the back of the cage for her first goal of the season with an assist from Roosje Neve in the final minute of play.
Â
"It's great to come away with a win today," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "We knew that after the win on Friday night, that we might be sluggish or mentally, emotionally and physically fatigued, so we're very happy that we were able to get the result. I do want to give a big shoutout to the Central Michigan goalkeeper - Katie Maxim was absolutely outstanding – a lot of credit to her for keeping the ball out of the cage. That team gave us a great battle and fought pretty hard."
Â
The Cards have another quick turnaround before a opening a tough three-game stretch starting with a Tuesday 12 p.m. matchup at Indiana.
