Julie Kouijzer delivers the game winner in the fourth quarter, Merlijn van der Vegt posts three stops in the shutout
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The fifth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated Indiana 1-0 to earn its fifth straight shutout Tuesday afternoon at Indiana's Deborah Tobias Field.
Â
Julie Kouijzer's penalty corner goal with just over six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter stood as the game winner and Merlijn van der Vegt posted three of saves to help the Cardinals (12-1) extend their win streak to six games.
Â
The teams played through three scoreless quarters in which Louisville held an 8-2 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge in penalty corners. The Cardinals finally broke through midway through the final quarter after earning their fifth corner of the game. IU goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge turned back a shot by Emilia Kaczmarczyk and Kouijzer was positioned to send the rebound into the cage for her second goal of the season.
Â
The Hoosiers (5-8) built their attack in the next five minutes, drawing their first corner of the contest and quickly fired off a shot on goal, but van der Vegt was there for the stop and the Cardinals' defense stood withstood two more IU shots to preserve the shutout.
Â
"This week was always going to be a challenging week with our preparation for each opponent," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "I thought we did a nice job across the board, on both sides of the ball and improved aspects of our press. Our defense continues to be solid, and we need to take a closer look at our play in the front third and how we can connect better to generate more dangerous opportunities. Overall pretty proud of our group and where we are at this point."
Â
The Cardinals will return to action against a pair of top-10 opponents with an ACC matchup at No. 2 Duke on Friday and a home showdown with No. 6 Iowa on Sunday at Trager Stadium.
