Cardinals Open Season at Covered Bridge Open
September 01, 2022 | Cross Country
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Louisville cross country programs will open the 2022 season at the Covered Bridge Open in Boone, N.C. on Friday. The invitational, hosted by Appalachian State University, will take place at Don Kennedy Trails State Farm with the women's 5K race beginning at 5 p.m., and the men's 8K following immediately after at 5:45 p.m.
"We are excited to open our fall season with a great opportunity on a course that is new to us," said head coach Dale Cowper. "This weekend will give us an opening evaluation point as well as serve as an excellent trip for our team to continue bonding. This element will be critical for us with a large group of newcomers joining us this fall."
The Cardinals will travel 22 runners to North Carolina, with 10 women and 12 men toeing the line. Along with Louisville, the teams competing include Appalachian State, High Point, Lees-McRae College, Lenoir-Rhyne, Mercer, Southern Indiana, Tennessee Tech, UNC Asheville, West Florida, Western Carolina, and Milligan, along with ACC opponent Florida State.
The women's team welcomes back four runners from last year's squad, including sophomore Megan John, who scored in all five of the Cardinals' meets during the 2021 season. Also returning is fellow sophomore Lexie Paszkiewicz, who capped her freshman season with scoring efforts in both the ACC Championships and the NCAA Southwest Regional. The women's team welcomes 10 newcomers, including five transfers and five freshmen.
On the men's side, eight runners return with seven newcomers entering the fold. Ian Kibiwot enters his sophomore year following a freshman campaign that saw him finish as the top Louisville scorer in all five meets on the year, including top-five finishes at the Tennessee Dual and Arturo Barrios Invitational. The men welcome six freshman along with Forest MacKenzie, a senior transfer from New Hampshire.
