Red Wins Opening Scrimmage

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Fans of the No. 4-ranked University of Louisville volleyball team got a sneak preview of the year to come at the Red/Black Scrimmage Saturday afternoon at the L&N Credit Union Arena.

The Red Team coached by assistant coach Todd Chamberlain prevailed 25-23, 25-23, 25-20 in a spirited contest in front of a crowd of 700 plus fans.  In a bonus set, Red won again this time with a score of 27-25.

The Cards were led by Claire Chausee's 23 kills for the Red. Anna DeBeer paced the Black squad with 16 kills. Cara Cresse notched seven blocks and Aiko Jones and Sydni Schetnan each had four.

Transfer setter Raquel Lazaro had 30 assists and landed two aces and Phekran Kong led with three aces.
Â
On defense, libero Elena Scott led with 21 digs. Alexa Hendricks had 13 and Ceci Rush had 14 digs.

The Cardinals are coming off an historic year that saw UofL run the table in the regular season going 28-0 and winning the ACC Championship. UofL took its unblemished record into the post season, winning the first two rounds at L&N Arena before hosting the regional at Freedom Hall. The Cardinals emerged from the regional to head to Columbus for the Final Four for the first time in school history.

Louisville volleyball's 2022 schedule will feature 13 home matches, two home tournaments and a match played at the KFC Yum! Center. Fans of the Cardinals will have a chance to set new attendance records as UofL will face rival Notre Dame on Oct. 26 at the KFC Yum! Center.

UofL returns all but two starters to the lineup. Gone are First Team All-Americans Tori Dilfer and Anna Stevenson. The Cardinals return Third Team All-American outside hitter Anna DeBeer and AVCA All-East Region players Aiko Jones, Elena Scott and Amaya Tillman as well as Claire Chaussee to the starting lineup. DeBeer led the team in kills with 343 hitting .257 on the season. Tillman recorded 149 blocks last season with 1.35 blocks per set. Scott, the libero for the Cardinals, led the team in digs with 415. New faces in the race for playing time will be USC transfer Raquel Lazaro at setter, Phekran Kong at middle and with four freshmen in the mix as well. Lazaro was an AVCA All-Pacific South Honorable Mention nominee in 2019 and the 2018 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year.Â
