Cards Take the Field on New Turf
August 15, 2022 | Field Hockey
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - As the start of the 2022 season quickly approaches the University of Louisville field hockey team will begin play on a brand new turf as the Cardinals take the field at Trager Stadium. The new playing surface provides the finishing touch to recent upgrades which include a new state-of-the art video board on the north end of the stadium and secondary scoreboard on the east side. The project was funded through private donations to The New Standard campaign.
Â
"We are extremely excited to be back on our home field with our new turf," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "It seemed so close, yet so far away in the weeks leading up to preseason and we are finally able to take the field at home. It looks and feels great – it is certainly the "Gold Standard" of college field turf and we are so proud to know that Trager Stadium will continue to be one of the best fields in country."
Â
The recently-installed AstroTurf System 90 combines the traditional knitted nylon synthetic turf with a 3/8th inch closed cell pad. The turf and pad system provides high level performance for a fast, non-directional ball roll.
Â
The knitted nylon surface is unique to AstroTurf and is preferred because it provides tight tolerances, non-directional play through its knitted fabrication and a uniform surface. It is the "original" AstroTurf carpet for Field Hockey-exclusive fields which are known for their playability, durability and low maintenance. AstroTurf fields have long been regarded as the unequivocal standard for field hockey performance.
Â
The upgrades enhance an already-elite facility which has served as the host site for six NCAA Division I Championships and three NCAA Division II Championships. In 2002, Trager Stadium became the first University of Louisville facility to host a national championship since the 1969 NCAA men's basketball Final Four was held at Freedom Hall.
Â
"We are also grateful for the donors and the fundraising efforts of The New Standard along with the University of Louisville's support for women's sports which has made this possible," said Sowry. "It is really going to help our program in the quest to win our first national championship."
Â
About the New Standard
In September 2021, on the eve of the 50th Anniversary of Title IX, the University of Louisville Athletic Department launched The New Standard, a capital campaign which supports equity and increases opportunities for women's sports at UofL. Since October 2021, the campaign has raised $3.4 million toward its $10 million goal with funds directly impacting UofL's women's sports.
Â
The field hockey turf and video boards are the most recently completed projects for the campaign following renovations of locker rooms for women's basketball and women's tennis, the volleyball team lounge, a new video board for lacrosse as well as funds for new Louie the Cardinal mascot suits.
Â
The New Standard will continue to help fund capital projects across all women's sports at UofL from upgrading Ralph Wright Natatorium and revamping softball's indoor facility to updating and renovating the locker rooms, team area and training rooms for rowing and track and field and cross country.
