Host third-ranked North Carolina tops No. 19 Louisville 3-0
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 19th-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team fell 3-0 to No. 3 North Carolina Sunday afternoon at Shelton Stadium.
"North Carolina is a good team and they had an answer for anything that we tried to do," said UofL field hockey coach Justine Sowry. "When the pressure is on us, we stray away from our game plan and become disconnected."
North Carolina (11-1, 4-1 ACC) got on the scoreboard early with a penalty goal by Kara Heck midway through the first quarter. Isabel Beore capitalized on a corner opportunity in the second quarter to give the Tar Heels a 2-0 lead entering halftime.
The third quarter brought another penalty corner goal for North Carolina as Sanne Hak converted with under a minute remaining in the frame.
Louisville had a scoring opportunity in the fourth quarter, earning back-to-back penalty corners, but a pair of shots by Annabel Sep were turned back by the Carolina defense to keep the Cards at bay.
In the game, North Carolina outshot Louisville 23-2 with a 7-0 edge in shots on goal and a 12-2 advantage in penalty corners. Alessia Cicuto (1-1) and Emily Young each collected a pair of saves in the contest.
"This was a challenging weekend for us," said Sowry. "We need to take a good look individually and collectively and get back to what we do best. I believe in this group of young women and we will be back."
Louisville (6-7, 0-3 ACC) will continue ACC play on Oct. 17 when California visits Trager Stadium.
