Cards Rally to Beat No. 16/15 Clemson in Series Finale

CLEMSON, S.C. – Carmyn Greenwood's two-run homer in the top of the eighth lifted the University of Louisville softball team to a 4-2 win over No. 16/15 Clemson in the ACC series finale Sunday at McWhorter Stadium.

Greenwood's ninth home run of the season came with one out in the top of the eighth broke a 2-2 tie. Jenna Servi got the eighth inning offense started with her second hit of the game, a single to right field. Greenwood stepped up to the plate and took the first pitch she saw over the left field fence to put the Cardinals on top 4-2.

Louisville (18-12, 2-4 ACC) withstood a rally attempt by the Tigers who put runners on the corners in the in the bottom of the eighth. Marissa Guimbarda singled and was safe at second on an error when Kyah Keller reached on a fielder's choice. Another fielder's choice saw Keller out at second, but allowed Aby Vieira to reach, placing the potential tying run on first. Louisville starter Taylor Roby battled with Clemson's Alia Logeleo through a 17-pitch at bat which ended with a pop up caught by shortstop Ally Alexander, sealing the win for the Cardinals.

Roby went the distance in the circle to get the win, surrendering two earned runs on six hits and striking out nine in 8.0 innings of work to move to 8-4 on the season.

Servi went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs and scored a run to lead the Cardinals at the plate. With her team trailing 2-0, the junior's two-run double in the top of the fifth helped the Cardinals erase a 2-0 deficit. Freshman Korbe Otis got the frame started with a single and proceeded to steal second. Freshman Dylann Cravens walked and both runners moved on Hannah File's groundout to set up Servi who doubled them home, tying the score at 2-2.

The game featured a pitcher's duel through the first two and a half innings with Clemson's Regan Spencer allowing one hit and Taylor Roby retiring the first seven batters she faced – four of them on strikeouts.

The Tigers (21-10, 3-6 ACC) broke through with a run in the third when Alia Logoleo singled and scored on McKenzie Clark's RBI single. Aby Vieira's RBI single plated another run to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the fourth.

After Servi's game-tying double, Roby and the Cardinals' defense stymied Clemson's subsequent scoring attempts. The Tigers threatened to push a run across in the home half of the fifth with runners at second and third, but Roby delivered her seventh strikeout of the game to hold them at bay. In the sixth, Logoleo singled, stole second and attempted to score following a Louisville miscue, but second baseman Dylann Cravens rifled a throw to catcher Kendall Smith who applied to tag for the third out of the inning.

Both teams went down in order in the seventh inning to keep the score tied at 2-2, sending the contest into extra innings.

Louisville (18-12, 2-4 ACC) will return to Ulmer Stadium on Wednesday when the Cardinals play host to Liberty at 6 p.m.

- Sunday's victory marks the second road win over a top-20 team this season for Louisville. The Cardinals also defeated then No. 10/8 Arkansas 8-4 on February 28 in Fayetteville.
