Cards Fall Short Against Virginia in ACC Quarterfinals
November 01, 2022 | Field Hockey
DURHAM, N.C. – The 12th-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team fell 1-0 to No. 5 Virginia in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tuesday evening at Duke Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
Â
In the game, Louisville outshot Virginia 13-4 with a 6-2 edge in shots on goal and a 5-2 advantage in corners. Jet Trimborn collected five saves and the Cavaliers added a defensive save while Sasha Elliott had one stop for the Cardinals.
Â
Third-seeded Virginia (12-6, 3-3) got on the scoreboard in the first quarter when Taryn Tkachuk delivered a shot past Louisville's Sasha Elliott to put the Cavaliers on top 1-0 with 3:30 left to play in the frame.
Â
The sixth-seeded Cardinals (12-7, 1-5) had a chance to score with under a minute remaining in the second quarter when they were awarded a penalty corner, but Mia Duchars' shot on goal was stopped by Virginia's Jet Trimborn.
Â
The Cavaliers took the 1-0 lead into halftime after Louisville held a 4-2 edge in shots while each team managed one shot on goal. UVA held a 2-1 advantage in penalty corners.
Â
Louisville gathered momentum in the third quarter, earning three straight corners in the final two minutes of the period, but the Cards were unable to convert on the opportunities, firing off four shots, two which were on goal.
Â
The fourth quarter brought more of the same for the Cardinals who continued their offensive push with two more shots with Louisville's best chance coming from a shot by Aimee Plumb which got past Trimborn, but Virginia's Jans Croon was able to deflect the ball away.
Â
Elliott was lifted for an extra field player with just over a minute left to play, but Louisville was unable to manufacture another scoring opportunity.
Â
HEAD COACH JUSTINE SOWRY ON THE LOSS
"Tough game, tough loss. I think the first half was pretty competitive between both teams, back-and-forth with momentum changes, but in the second half, we were lights out, dominant. I'm just so proud of the way we played with the ball, playing Louisville field hockey and defending as a unit. We had our chances to win, unfortunately we were unable to put one in the back of the net. Now we wait. Our resume is still strong. We'll be watching closely. I think we still have a chance and with the hockey that we're playing, a potential opponent in the NCAA tournament would not want to face the Louisville field hockey team."
