Cardinals Fall to Clemson, 2-1
October 06, 2022 | Women's Soccer
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville women's soccer team dropped a tight contest to Clemson, 2-1, Thursday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals scored the opening goal in the first few minutes but two-straight first half goals gave the Tigers the win.
The Cardinals wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as they opened the scoring in the second minute.
Corrine Dente got the play started in the midfield and she played a ball out to the wing where Addie Chester was making a run up-field. She threaded a ball up to Patricia Ward, who got behind the Clemson defense. Ward was 1-v-1 with the Clemson keeper and slotted the ball in the back of the net for the game's opening goal.
It was Ward's first goal with the Cardinals this season and also the quickest goal this season for Louisville. The goal in the second minute was the fastest goal for the Cardinals since 2019, when Taylor Kerwin scored in the opening minute against Dayton.
The Tigers found the equalizer in the eighth minute and the score was level 1-1 early on in the match.
Louisville looked to take the lead again in the 31st minute and it was Chester and Ward connecting up-field. Chester hit Ward on another through ball and Ward had two straight attempts on goal that were blocked by two Clemson defenders.
The Tigers jumped into the lead in the 36th minute and the Cardinals faced a 2-1 deficit at the half.
The second half was filled with a lot of play in the midfield as the team defenses dug in after the eventful first half.
The Cardinals had a couple of chances to tie the game, most notably in the 56th minute from Chester. She tied for the team lead with four shots and her attempt in the 56th minute was on frame but pushed away by the Tigers keeper.
Louisville upped the pressure in the attacking third over the final 15 minutes but were unable to find the equalizer.
The Cardinals continue their homestand this weekend as they host Boston College at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium on Sunday. The Cards and Eagles will square off at noon on Sunday and the game will be broadcast nationally on the ACC Network.
