RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Aimee Plumb delivered a goal and an assist to help the fifth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team beat host VCU 3-1 Sunday at Cary Street Field. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 9-2 on the season.
Â
The game was played through steady rainfall as each team registered eight shots - six on goal - and Louisville held a 3-2 edge in penalty corners.
Â
The Rams (7-4) gained possession early, outshooting the Cardinals 2-0 in the first quarter, but Louisville was on target with its first shot of the contest in the second quarter as senior Julie Kouijzer connected on assist from Aimee Plumb for her fifth goal of the season.
Â
The Cards added another goal with 38 seconds remaining in the first half. This time, graduate senior Katie Schneider tallied her fifth goal of the season, capitalizing on a penalty corner feed from senior Mattie Tabor.
Â
UofL took the 2-0 lead into halftime after outshooting VCU 5-2 with all five Louisville shots landing on goal. The Cards also held a 2-0 edge in penalty corners, converting on both attempts.
Â
VCU broke through in the fourth minute of the second half behind a penalty corner goal by Janne Wetzel to cut Louisville's lead in half.
                                                                        Â
The Cardinals added an insurance goal midway through the fourth quarter after Mia Duchars sent a cross into the circle and Plumb chased the ball down after it bounced of a defender's stick and sent a reverse-stick shot into the cage to make the score 3-1.
Â
Louisville graduate senior goalkeeper Sasha Elliott (9-2) collected five saves against her former team while VCU's Sheridan Messier had three stops for the Rams.
