No. 7 Cardinals Fall at No. 14 Wake Forest
October 07, 2022 | Field Hockey
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The seventh-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team lost 2-0 at No. 14 Wake Forest in an Atlantic Coast Conference contest Friday evening at Kentner Stadium.
Â
Louisville attacked early in the game delivering four shots on goal and earning two corners in the first quarter. The Demon Deacons surged in the second quarter with a 4-1 advantage in shots and the teams were even with one corner apiece in that frame, but neither could capitalize on their offensive opportunities and entered the break in a scoreless tie.
Wake Forest (8-3, 1-1 ACC) broke through with 5:23 left in the third quarter when Sky Carron's penalty stroke found its way into the cage. Â
Â
The Demon Deacons added an insurance goal midway through the fourth quarter when Immie Gillgrass connected on a feed from Nat Friedman to make the score 2-0.
In the game, Wake Forest outshot Louisville 12-9 and held a 4-3 edge in penalty corners. UofL goalkeeper Sasha Elliott posted a season-high nine saves – including five in the second half - while Ellie Todd collected five stops for the Demon Deacons.
HEAD COACH JUSTINE SOWRY
"Disappointing result considering the improved performance between the 25s. We had some great passages of play, but we were unable to capitalize - and they did. We need to take some lessons and come back strong on Sunday."
Â
UP NEXT
The Cardinals (9-3, 0-3) will close out their four-game road stretch on Sunday at No. 16 Liberty.
Â
NOTE
• Friday's contest at Wake Forest marked the sixth time Louisville has face a ranked opponent - the Cards are 3-3 in those games with wins against then-No. 4 Michigan, No. 13 Princeton and No. 11 Penn State.Â
