Louisville Set for Blazer Invitational
January 13, 2022 | Track & Field
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville track and field team hits the road for the first time this season as the Cardinals head to Birmingham, Ala. for the 11th annual Blazer Invitational on Friday, Jan. 14 at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
"Friday's competition is an opportunity for our program to compete against high level teams in a terrific venue," said head coach Dale Cowper. "This track is the site of this year's NCAA Indoor Championships and our staff wanted to make sure that our students had the chance to compete here before they arrive in March. Over the last few seasons, we've had tremendous performances at this site, and we expect to see each member of our travel squad compete to the fullest of their ability tomorrow."
The Cardinals will get their first look at an ACC opponent in Miami, while the rest of the field features programs from the SEC, C-USA and Sun Belt conferences. The invitational kicks off with multiple field events at 10 a.m. and concludes with the 4x400m relay at 5:30 p.m.
Louisville opened its indoor season with nine event wins as hosts of the inaugural Cardinal Classic on Dec. 11. As a program, a total of 15 athletes made their track and field debuts and 14 returners set personal best marks.
Addie Wanner kicked off the season with a 1.65m/5-5 first-place finish in the women's high jump, before Ariel Lawrence, Brooke Weimer, and Riley Burger continued the women's field success with a trio of personal bests in the long jump. Louisville swept first-place finishes in both the men's and women's 3000-meter, highlighted by a standout performance from Ben Ewert. The redshirt senior earned a personal-best time of 8:24.86, crossing the line in over 30 seconds faster than the next runner. Birmingham native Trey Allen also established a personal-best height of 2.18m/7-1.75 to take the men's high jump.
Isiah Pantiere set a school record in the men's 200-meter with a time of 21.22 seconds, while Jorge Contreras also carved his name in the record books with a personal-best shot put of 17.87m/58-7.5 that ranks seventh all-time for indoor program marks.
2021 All-American Sterling Warner-Savage is set to take the track for the first time this season in the 60-meter. Warner-Savage holds the top-10 times on Louisville's all-time performance list, posting the school record 6.62 mark at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships.
