LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Winners of five straight, the 14th-ranked University of Louisville men's soccer team squares off with No. 4 Duke on Friday night in Durham, N.C. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and will be televised on ACC Network Extra.
ABOUT THE CARDINALS
The Cardinals put seven goals on the board as they raced past Western Illinois 7-1 on Tuesday. The seven goals were the most since 1987 and the victory marked five straight for UofL.
Louisville enters Friday's match looking for its best ACC start. A win would move the Cardinals to 4-0-0 in league play for the first time since joining the conference in 2014.
SERIES HISTORY
Louisville and Duke will meet for the eighth time on Friday night with the Cardinals holding a 5-1-1 all-time advantage. UofL has won four straight over the Blue Devils, including a 3-0 victory in Louisville in 2018.
Friday night will be the third consecutive matchup between Louisville and Duke with both teams ranked in the top 15. The seventh-ranked Cardinals downed No. 2 Duke 3-0 in 2018, while No. 8 Louisville defeated 12th-ranked Duke 1-0 in Durham in 2017.
ACC'S TOP OFFENSE AND DEFENSE COLLIDE IN DURHAM
Friday night's match between Louisville and Duke will be a matchup of the ACC's top offensive and defensive teams. Louisville is currently tied for the conference lead in goals and goals per game, while Duke paces the ACC in goals allowed.
The Cardinals are third nationally with 26 goals on the season, with 21 coming in their last five matches. However, Duke has allowed just one goal this fall and none in its last four times on the pitch.
CARDS HAVE RECORD-SETTING NIGHT AGAINST WESTERN ILLINOIS
Goals came early and often for Louisville in a 7-1 victory over Western Illinois on Tuesday night. The seven goals and 21 points were the most for the Cardinals since putting 10 on the board against Asbury on Oct. 1, 1987.
Louisville's seven assists were the third-most in a match in program history, while the 29 shots ranked seventh all-time. The Cardinals finished with 19 shots on goal, the program's most since at least 2001.
LOUISVILLE SPREADING THE GOAL SCORING WEALTH
While the Cardinals have been putting goals on the board in large quantities, the scoring has come from a variety of sources.
Aboubacar Camara and Pedro Fonseca have led the way with seven and five goals, respectively, but 10 different Cardinals have scored a goal this season with six recording multiple goals.
Brandon McManus and Ayden Nocus each registered their first career goals in Tuesday's win over Western Illinois.
CARDINALS RISING UP THE RANKINGS
In the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll released on Sept. 28, the Cardinals moved into the No. 14 spot after posting a 6-2-0 record and a 3-0-0 start in ACC play.
The Cardinals first appeared in the poll at No. 25 on Sept. 21. It marked the first time Louisville was in the national rankings since the final poll of the 2019 season. The Cardinals reached the third round of the NCAA Tournament in 2019 and were ranked No. 20 in the final rankings.
GOALS, GOALS, AND MORE GOALS FOR CAMARA
Aboubacar Camara scored just one goal in six matches during the fall of 2020. Since the calendar has flipped to 2021 however, the forward has been among the best goal scorers in the country.
Camara leads the Cardinals with seven goals on the season, a total that ranks first in the ACC and sixth nationally. He scored five goals in the first seven matches of the season, the most through seven matches since David Guzman also had five in 2006.
Camara scored in four consecutive matches (Kentucky, Wake Forest, Syracuse, Northern Kentucky), becoming the first UofL player to do so since Tim Kubel in 2014.
LOUISVILLE PUTTING ON IMPRESSIVE OFFENSIVE DISPLAY
After a slow start to the season offensively, the Cardinals have gone on a scoring binge over the last three weeks. Louisville tallied just five goals over the first four matches of the season, going 2-2-0 over that stretch. However, the Cardinals have found the net 21 times in their last five matches, securing their first five-match winning streak since September of 2016.
Louisville put nine goals on the board in consecutive wins over Syracuse and Northern Kentucky, and then again in victories over Boston College and Western Illinois, the most in a two-match stretch since scoring 12 in matches against Asbury (10) and Transylvania (2) during the 1987 season.
The Cardinals currently rank lead the ACC and rank fourth nationally at 2.89 goals per match, and lead the ACC with 10 goals through three conference matches. UofL also leads the ACC and is third in the country with 26 goals and is first in the ACC and second nationally with 8.00 corner kicks per match.
