No. 14 Cardinals Suffer First ACC Defeat at No. 4 Duke
October 01, 2021 | Men's Soccer
The loss ended Louisville’s five-match winning streak.
DURHAM, N.C. – In a physical match featuring a pair of top-15 teams, the No. 14 University of Louisville men's soccer team took its first conference loss of the season at fourth-ranked Duke 3-1 on Friday night.
For Louisville (7-3-0, 3-1-0 ACC), the loss ends a five-match winning streak.
The Cardinals had possession and applied a lot of pressure early on in Friday's match. Pedro Fonseca had a scoring opportunity 10 minutes in, pulling down a ball before sidestepping a defender and beating the keeper. However, the play was whistled dead for a foul on the Louisville forward, keeping the match scoreless.
While Louisville controlled play early, it was Duke (8-1-0, 4-0-0) that netted the first goal, converting off a counterattack in the 22nd minute. The goal came on the first shot attempt of the night for the Blue Devils.
Macoumba Ba had a go at goal in the 25th minute that deflected off a Duke defender and redirected toward the near post. Unfortunately for the Cardinals though, Eliot Hamill was able to contort himself and keep the ball out of the net.
Duke struck again in the 33rd minute, with Detre Bell taking down a Blue Devil attacker in the box and a conversion of the penalty kick that ensued.
The Cardinals were able to get one back though before the halftime break. Fonseca dribbled into the box from the left flank and beat the keeper on a shot at the near post to cut the lead in half. The goal was the first allowed by Duke in regulation this season and the sixth of the year for Fonseca.
Much like the start of the match, Louisville was on the attack early in the second half. Fonseca, Ba and Aboubacar Camara all had opportunities in the first 10 minutes, but each shot ended up off target.
Duke had a chance to stretch the lead back to two in the 64th minute, but Bell made a save on a strong shot and Bradley Sample cleared the ball off the line to keep the match at 2-1.
With just over 18 minutes to play, Bell again was whistled for a foul inside the box, giving the Blue Devils their second penalty of the night and Bell his second yellow card to send him off. Gavin Krenecki entered in place of Bell and the Duke penalty attempt clanged off the right post and kept the Cardinals within one.
Despite playing down a man, UofL kept pushing for the tying goal. Ba nearly bent a shot inside the right post in the 82nd minute and Camara saw his shot attempt from the top of the box deflect off the post with just over five minutes to play.
The Blue Devils finally put the match away with three minutes to go, getting their third tally of the night to secure the victory.
Louisville outshot Duke 15-12 on the night in a physical match that featured 27 fouls and 11 cards between the two sides.
The Cardinals will now have a week to prepare for a road match next Friday at Virginia Tech. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET in Blacksburg.
