Huckaby’s Double Overtime Strike Hands Cardinals 1-0 Win
September 03, 2021 | Men's Soccer
The freshman scored in the 105th minute as Louisville defeated Bellarmine.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – With just over five minutes remaining in the second overtime, Dante Huckaby's first career goal secured a 1-0 victory for the University of Louisville men's soccer team over Bellarmine on Friday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Huckaby won back a 50-50 ball in the attacking third and played to Brandon McManus in the right corner of the box. McManus dropped the ball off with a back heel back to Huckaby who blasted the game-winner into the left side of the net.
It was the second straight dramatic winner for the Cardinals, who defeated Evansville on Monday night with two goals in the final four minutes.
Louisville (2-1-0) held possession for the majority of the night, but the scoreboard showed zeroes through the first 100 minutes.
Aboubacar Camara sent a shot off the left post early on in the contest and Pedro Fonseca's free kick in the 21st minute ricocheted off the crossbar. The Cardinals held a 5-1 advantage in shots after 45 minutes and had 10 corner kick attempts.
The second half saw much of the same, with Louisville continuing to mount pressure at the Bellarmine (2-1-0) goal. Ugochukwu Achara's 79th minute shot missed just out wide and Nico Diaz had a close look with less than two minutes left in regulation that sailed just over the bar.
The first overtime saw just one shot per side, sending the match into the double overtime and setting up Huckaby's heroics.
The Cardinals outshot Bellarmine 17-4 on the night with a 15-6 edge in corner kicks. Detre Bell kept the Knights out of the net for his first shutout of the season.
Louisville's four-match homestand continues on Tuesday with the annual Battle of the Bluegrass. The Cardinals welcome Kentucky to Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET and the match will be televised on ACC Network.
