Kickoff against Northern Kentucky is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team begins another extended home stretch on Tuesday night playing host to Northern Kentucky. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET and will be televised on ACC Network Extra.
ABOUT THE CARDINALS
The Cardinals made it two consecutive ACC victories with a wild back-and-forth 5-4 double-overtime victory at Syracuse on Friday night. Pedro Fonseca converted a pair of penalty kicks in the first half during a stretch that saw four PKs tallied in a span of 10 minutes. Aboubacar Camara and Ugo Achara found the net in the second 45 and Josh Jones headed home the game-winner in the 103rd minute.
Louisville is one of three ACC teams currently 2-0-0 to start league play and leads the conference with eight goals through two ACC matches.
SERIES HISTORY
Louisville and Northern Kentucky square off for the 11th all-time meeting on Tuesday night. NKU leads the series 6-4-0, but the two programs have met just once since 1988. The Cardinals got a 96th minute goal from Emil Elveroth to defeat the Norse 1-0 in the last meeting in 2019.
FONSECA SHOWING OUT IN SENIOR SEASON
Injuries limited Pedro Fonseca to just 16 matches over his first two seasons (2018-19) at Louisville. However, a healthy Fonseca has been among the best players in the ACC over the last two seasons.
Dating back to the start of the 2020 season, Fonseca has tallied eight goals and seven assists in 20 matches. The forward set career highs in 2020 with four goals and four assists and is on the verge of surpassing those numbers just six matches into the season.
Already in 2021, Fonseca has matched his career high with four goals and is just one shy of his career high assist total. The Brazilian netted a pair of penalty kicks at Syracuse on Sept. 17, becoming the first Louisville player to record multiple goals in a match since Kino Ryusuke on Oct. 1, 2019 and the first with two PK goals since Mohamed Thiaw on Oct. 10, 2017.
SCORING BINGE CONTINUES FOR CAMARA
Aboubacar Camara scored just one goal in six matches during the fall of 2020. Since the calendar has flipped to 2021 however, the forward has been among the best goal scorers in the country.
Camara scored in five of Louisville's six spring matches and has kept that roll going this fall. Through six matches, Camara leads the Cardinals and is tied for sixth in the ACC with four tallies. Five of his 10 career goals have proven to be game-winners as well including a strike in the 89th minute that lifted the Cardinals past Evansville.
FRESHMEN PROVIDING IMMEDIATE IMPACT FOR CARDS
John Michael Hayden and his coaching staff signed one of the top recruiting classes in the country in 2021, a group that was ranked ninth by TopDrawerSoccer. That collection of student-athletes has stepped onto campus and provided instant impact for the Cardinals.
Sander Roed has started each of the last three matches in the midfield, while true freshmen are making up three-quarters of the Louisville back line. Josh Jones has started four of six matches at center back with Patrick Ajdukiewicz and Dante Huckaby each starting five matches on the outsides.
Their impact has been measurable as well. Roed is third on the team with five points (one goal, three assists), while Jones has a pair of goals including the game-winner in double overtime at Syracuse and Huckaby notched a double-overtime winner of his own against Bellarmine.
CARDIAC CARDS FULL OF DRAMATIC FINISHES
The 2021 Cardinals have already shown a flair for the dramatics six matches into the season, with four of the six being decided in the final minutes and three of them requiring two overtime periods.
After losing 2-1 on a goal in the 108th minute at Saint Louis to open the season, the Cardinals returned home and scored two goals over the final four minutes to secure a 2-1 win over Evansville and followed it with a 105th minute goal from Dante Huckaby for a double overtime win over Bellarmine. UofL then picked up a wild 5-4 double overtime win on a goal from Josh Jones in the 103rd minute at Syracuse.
