Cards Excited for NCAA Regional Opportunity on its Home Course
May 08, 2021 | Women's Golf
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville head women's golf coach Whitney Young thinks her team has a distinct advantage next week as the Cardinals host to an NCAA Regional for the first time in school history.
The Cardinals will take on a competitive 18-team field beginning Monday at the par 71, 6,289-yard University of Louisville Golf Club. The Cardinals tee off at 8:50 a.m. off the tenth 10 on Monday morning.
"We're excited to host a regional for the first time at the ULGC," Young said. "The weather is looking to be ok for the week, and we're excited to showcase what we have here at the ULGC. It's just a huge advantage to be able to host. It's great to be able to say we've hosted a regional, and we hope to be able to host more in the future."
The Cardinals were selected for postseason play for the seventh consecutive season and 13th time in program history after they were announced as one of the at-large teams in the Louisville Regional. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will be played May 10-12 at University of Louisville Golf Club.
For Louisville, the seventh straight appearance is the longest streak in program history. The Cardinals are the No. 12 seed in the 18-team region that features six teams inside the top 25 of the latest Golfstat rankings.
Top-ranked South Carolina is the top seed in the regional followed by No. 9 Florida State and No. 8 Auburn. No. 18 Texas is the fourth seed and No. 16 Arkansas is the fifth seed. Â No. 21 Texas Tech and No, 27 UCLA are all in the field as well.
Â
"We were very lucky when we were watching the selection show because we knew where we were going," Young said. "We're very familiar with everything here. There's nothing to get to know. I told our players to take advantage of the opportunity… get out on the golf course and play this course over and over. The other teams coming in here don't have that opportunity."
The Cardinals are looking to build off their postseason performance from 2018, when they took fourth at the NCAA San Francisco Regional to qualify for their second-ever appearance at the NCAA Championships. In their last NCAA event during the 2019 campaign, the Cardinals placed 11th in the NCAA East Lansing Regional.
Â
Louisville is coming off a seventh-place finish at the ACC Championships after Lauren Hartlage broke the school record with her 23rd top-10 finish after placing in a tie for sixth place. Hartlage is ranked as one of the top players in the league after finishing the regular season with a 72.13 stroke average and posted four top-20 finishes.
"Lauren has been such a good player for us," Young said. "She finished in the top 10 in conference and at the Moon Golf Invitational. She wants to do well. She's a special student athlete and we're lucky to have her for five years. She's accomplished so much at the University of Louisville."
Â
Hana Ryskova is another player to watch during regional action after she finished with a 74.00 stroke average and one top-10 finish.
The top six teams and top three individuals not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championship, held May 21-26 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Â
The 24 advancing teams and 12 individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play. Following 54 holes of competition, the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will advance for one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match-play competition and the 72-hole stroke-play individual champion.
Â
The top eight teams after 72 holes of play will be placed into a bracket with match play to determine the national champion.
