Cardinals Fall in Saturday Matchup at North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Louisville softball team fell 5-0 to host North Carolina Saturday at Anderson Field in game two of an ACC series.

The teams will wrap up the weekend with a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. on Sunday.

The Cardinals (20-26-1, 14-20-1 ACC) tallied five hits and stranded four runners with Makayla Hurst connecting on her eighth double of the season.

North Carolina (13-24, 9-18 ACC) jumped to an early lead when Taylor Green led off the second with a home run. Brittany Pickett singled and Kiersten Licea reached on a two-base error to push runners to second and third for Stubbs' two-run single.

The Tar Heels tacked on another run in the fourth with an RBI single by Campbell Hutcherson. Pickett's one-out solo home run in the sixth made the score 5-0.

Louisville's best chance to score came in the fourth inning the Cards were trailing 3-0. Hurst delivered a two-out double. Charley Butler followed with a hit and proceeded to steal second to place two runners in scoring position, but a strikeout ended the threat.

Carmyn Greenwood, Maddy Newman, Hurst, Butler and Jenna Servi each had a hit for the Cardinals.

Taylor Roby (12-12) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on six hits in 5.0 innings.

Pickett (9-8) picked up the complete game shutout, giving up five hits and striking out five.
