Cardinals Fall 3-1 at Boston College

BRIGHTON, Mass. – The University of Louisville softball team fell 3-1 to host Boston College in the opening game of an ACC series Friday evening. The teams will continue the series with a pair of ACC Network televised games on Saturday starting at 12 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Junior Charley Butler went 2-for-2 with an RBI to lead the Cardinals at the plate as Louisville took an early lead, but the Eagles tallied three unanswered runs to take the first game in a four-game series. Â

The Cardinals (17-24-1, 11-18-1 ACC) jumped to a 1-0 lead in the second when junior Cassady Greenwood singled. Junior Rebecca Chung's base hit pushed her to third and Butler's RBI single put Louisville on the scoreboard.

Boston College (12-28, 7-19 ACC) answered in the home half of the inning with a pair of doubles by Gianna Boccagno and Kennedy Labshere to even the score at 1-1.

The Eagles added a run in the fourth when Gianna Randazza singled and was lifted for pinch runner Erika Andal who came home on a double by Labshere.

Mataya's leadoff home run in the fifth pushed the score to 3-1.

Louisville had a chance to push a run across in the third when Roby connected on a two-out single and Makayla Hurst followed with a double to put runners in scoring position, but a groundout ended the threat.

The Cardinals also had a runner in scoring position in the fourth when Butler walked and senior Celene Funke singled, but Louisville could not capitalize on the opportunity.

Roby (10-10) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and striking out three in 4.1 innings.

Susannah Anderson (8-15) picked up the complete game win, giving up one earned run on nine hits and striking out three. Â
