April 18, 2021 | Softball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville softball team used a two-run homer by Taylor Roby in fourth and a two-run shot by Rebecca Chung in the seventh to rally from 4-0 deficit, but No. 21 Duke prevailed 5-4 in eight innings Sunday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium.
Â
Louisville (16-20, 10-15 ACC) will return to action next weekend when they host Florida State in a four-game ACC Series. The Cardinals will also celebrate senior day on Saturday.
Â
Duke (30-10, 18-10 ACC) built a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Gisele Tapia got the inning started with a single and scored on Jameson Kavel's double. Sydney Bolan's RBI single plated Kavel.
Â
The Blue Devils extended their lead to 4-0 in the third inning with Bolan's two-run double.
Â
The Cards remained scoreless before breaking through with two runs in the fourth. Carmyn Greenwood was hit by a pitch and Taylor Roby followed with a two-run home run. The redshirt junior's team-leading 12th home run of the season cut the score in half.
Â
Louisville struck again in the seventh with two runs. Maddy Newman connected on a one-out single and Rebecca Chung followed with her third home run of the season tying the game up 4-4. Â Â
Â
Duke countered with a run in the eighth inning when Kyla Morris registered a two-out single and eventually scored on a hit by Tapia to put the Blue Devils back on top 5-4.
   Â
The Cardinals threatened to score in the home half of the eighth inning when Carmyn Greenwood laced a single down the right field line and Taylor Roby was walked to place the go-ahead run on with one out. Duke's Peyton St. George retired the next two batters to keep the Cardinals off the board.
Â
Gabby Holloway (3-5) entered the game in the fourth inning and held the Blue Devils in check before allowing one earned run on seven hits with a strikeout in 5.0 innings of work. Chung led the Cardinals at the plate going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.Â
Â
Peyton St. George (12-6) picked up the win allowing two earned runs on three hits striking out seven in 3.0 innings of relief.
NOTES:
• Roby now has 12 home runs on the season and moves into a five-way tie for eighth on Louisville's single-season list for home runs. One more will move her into a tie for fourth. Courtney Moore owns the record with 17 in the 2005 season.
• Carmyn Greenwood is currently on a six-game hitting streak.
