Cardinals will get head-to-head competition in this weekend
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Louisville Rowing Cardinals are back in action this weekend when they head to Indianapolis for a head-to-head competition with Notre Dame this Saturday at the Eagle Creek Reservoir.
Â
"Our program took note of what was needed after our last race. This weekend's race is a good opportunity to see how our speed is coming along," said Derek Copeland, UofL head coach.
Â
This is the second competition of the season for the Cardinals, as they opened the season hosting the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational (ORCI) in Tennessee, where they raced for the first time in almost 500 days after the pandemic shut down their spring season through this fall.
Â
"Notre Dame will be prepared and will have gained speed too. Although we didn't race them directly at the ORCI, we hope to be able to observe gains that we have made over the last two weeks," said Copeland.
Â
Eagle Creek Reservoir is located in Indianapolis and features 1,400 acres of water. Eagle Creek Park has hosted a number of notable sporting events, including the NCAA Rowing Championships (2002, 2003, 2013, 2014, and 2019) and the World Rowing Championships (1994).
Â
Action kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with a 2K when the 1V8+ boats square off, followed by the 1V4+ at 10:40 and the 2V4+ going off at 11:00 a.m. followed by the 3V4+ at 11:10. The teams will then take a break and do some informal race pieces to gain experience after both teams have endured long layoffs.
Â
"When done correctly, this climb must be a patient one," said Copeland. "Not so much 'soft and relaxed' patience, but more like 'take it one fight at a time' patience."
