Cards Wrap Up Opening Day of Lake Wheeler Invitational

RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of Louisville rowing team completed day one of the 2025 Lake Wheeler Invitational Friday evening.

The highly-competitive field consists of 18 teams, four of which are ranked among the Pocock Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association top 25 including: No. 12 Virginia, No. 18 Duke, No. 20 Columbia and No. 24 North Carolina. Fellow ACC schools Boston College, Clemson and Miami are also among the schools competing as well as Boston University, Georgetown, Gonzaga, Jacksonville, Kansas, Navy, Rhode Island, Tulsa, Villanova and Washington State.

On the first day of action, the Cardinals registered five top-three finishes in first and second round heats.

Morning Session
The 3V8 boat opened the day with a second place showing in its heat with a time of 7:21.510, behind Boston College (7:12.164) and five seconds ahead of Georgetown (7:26.170). The 2V8 also finished second of 6:44.602, closing in behind Boston University (6:42.620). The varsity eight closed out the morning session placing third with a mark of 6:40.558, following Tulsa (6:38.754) and Boston University (6:35.564).

Also in the morning session, the 2V4 crew placed fourth in its heat, clocking in at 8:03.477. The Varsity 4 boat followed suit with a fourth place showing just 1.3 seconds behind Boston College.

Afternoon Session
In the second round of action, the Cardinals' 2V8 boat raced to a time of 6:51.260, earning a third place finish behind Clemson (6:44.632) and Gonzaga (6:47.292). The 3V8s kicked off the afternoon session with a time of 7:17.319, good for third.

Louisville's Varsity 4 crew turned in a time of 7:38.667 to place fourth. The 2V4 boat clocked in at 7:54.486 to place fourth with the Varsity 8 closing the afternoon, finishing fourth in its second round with a time of 6:49.081.

Upcoming Schedule
The Lake Wheeler Invitational will continue Saturday morning with the 3V8 getting the day started at 9 a.m. followed by the 2V4 at 9:30 a.m. The Cardinals' Varsity 4 boat will race at 10 a.m. and the 2V8 at 10:30 a.m. with the Varsity 8 wrapping up the day at 11 a.m.
