No. 23/25 Clemson Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville softball team fell 2-1 and 6-1 to No. 23/25 Clemson in an ACC doubleheader Saturday at Ulmer Stadium. The teams will meet in the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.

Redshirt senior Carmyn Greenwood went 3-for-5 on the day and the Cardinals got home runs from junior Rebecca Chung and freshman Vanessa Miller, but it wasn't enough as the Tigers claimed the series.

Clemson 2 – Louisville 1
In the day's opening game, Clemson jumped to a 1-0 lead behind McKenzie Clark's leadoff home run in the top of the first.

The Cardinals (9-10, 3-5 ACC) answered in the fourth when junior Rebecca Chung blasted one-out a solo shot over the fence in left centerfield. Her second homer of the season evened the score at 1-1.

Louisville had another chance to score in the bottom the second when Charley Butler delivered a two-out double and Maddy Newman's single placed runners on the corners, but a fly out ended the inning.

After surrendering the leadoff homer, redshirt junior Taylor Roby retired the next 10 batters she faced and allowed only three base runners until the seventh inning when a fielder's choice and back-to-back singles loaded the bases for the Tigers and a sacrifice bunt plated the go-ahead run.

Roby (5-4I took the loss, giving up two earned runs while scattering four hits and striking out one in a complete game effort.

In addition to Chung's homer, Carmyn Greenwood and Maddy Newman each had a pair of hits to lead the Cardinals at the plate as Louisville tallied eight hits to Clemson's four.

Millie Thompson (2-1) picked up the win, allowing one earned run on eight hits and striking out eight in 7.0 innings.

Clemson 6 – Louisville 1
In the second game of the day, Miller's shot over the centerfield fence put the Cardinals on the scoreboard in the seventh inning, but they would get no closer in a 6-1 loss to the Tigers (19-2, 11-2 ACC).

Clemson used five hits to grab a 3-0 lead in the second and tacked on another run in the third, extending the lead to 4-0.

Fourth inning solo home runs by McKenzie Clark and Alia Logeleo put the Tigers on top 6-0.

The Cardinals had a scoring opportunity in the sixth inning when Carmyn Greenwood earned a leadoff walk, stole second and advanced on a fly out by Roby, but was stranded at third.

Carmyn Greenwood, Miller and sophomore Payton Hudson each tallied a hit for Louisville.

Freshman Gabby Holloway (3-3) took the loss, giving up four earned runs on six hits in 2.0 innings.
